Yeah…so in case you folks didn’t know, I dig technology. I always have liked doing tech stuff, pushing cool tech stuff on my family and friends (ex: thedigity.com) and have gotten pretty good at understanding/fixing ‘all things tech’ over the years. Well, since everyone understands that I like tech and that I have a fairly good understanding of tech I get asked to help out from time to time to time to time to TIME, with their tech problems and lately I realized that there is a trend emerging.
Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy helping ppl out with their computers BUT, it started out, a while back, helping the people that I have consistent everyday contact with, which I did happily. Friends, family members, etc…then, as the years goes by, other people such as the ‘distance uncle that you haven’t seen since the last family reunion which was over 3 years ago‘ or ‘a friends girlfriend who you only met once when she was REALLY drunk and almost threw up in your apartment‘ types started requesting my assistance. And now, it seems like it has turned into the tech version of ‘7 degrees of Kevin Bacon’.
"Hey Brad, I’m a friend of your mom’s sisters half-brother twice removed on your grand pappy’s side. Can you help me fix my ‘puter?!?"
It’s become comical really. My weeknights or even weekends end up over at a relatives house hunched over a Windows 95 box that shoots smoke out the back everytime it’s turned on and my relative is pissed that the "cup holder" broke again.
I suppose I could try a few new tactics to limit it:
a) attempt to help them but "mysteriously" their computer gets completely fried and they have to buy a new one
b) impose a $50 an hour rate (which I don’t tell them about until after I’m done)
c) stop liking tech
d) figure out a way to say No
I suppose at this point it is too late. Hey maybe I can become famous off of this…and the pinnacle of my career will be when I’m fixing Kevin Bacon’s machine itself. (K.B. has always seemed kinda oogy to me, I’m afraid to see what’s on his PC)
