Idea Factory | Collective Movie Watching

CYOA Books

How bout a fun, random idea for the weekend?

Remember back in the day the ‘choose your own‘ adventure books? I started thinking today about how a major motion picture like that would be awesome to experience. The twist is that you would have the collective audience deciding the direction for the movie to progress. All the seats are designed with basic 1/2/3 option panels (embedded in their armrests perhaps?) and at different parts of the movie everyone picks their desired direction, the totals are summed, and the movie proceeds in that new direction. Everything, of course, would be networked and you would see the end totals as an overlay on the screen before proceeding but, come on, wouldn’t that be cool?

From a business standpoint, you could bet people would go back multiple times to see if they caught all the different directions the movie went or if they saw all the different endings.

It would also make the DVD much more likely to be bought by those that only saw it one time in the theaters and were curious of the different ways the movie played out.

Possible negatives: I could see politics, even in this setting, playing out. People shouting their choices, trying to persuade others. Some people could be turned off to this type of movie if they are just wanting a relaxing, quiet flick. Lastly, despite how ‘cool’ the theater technology and setting was, if the root product sucks, all of the rest is moot.

Have a good weekend everybody!
