iPhone | Very Cool but tap the brakes

January 10, 2007

UPDATE: Found this post again while posting another one but wanted to mention where I stand today, April 20st, 2008. I bought a 8GB iPhone and still love it. I also had just recently purchased its biggest competitor, the Nokia N95 8GB Unlocked. The Nokia has GPS, Wifi, radio, 5MP camera and all the bells & whistles you would want.

So was it better?

No, the interface was awful and was just really difficult to use for messaging/emails/etc. So I’m returning and going back to my iPhone. By FAR the best phone out today.

So I haven’t looked yet at Technorati but I bet the top tag for today is probably iPhone with the recent announcement of Apple’s iPhone. I sat impatiently refreshing my browser on Engadget.com loving every extra detail that is coming in. My initial knee jerk review was, “Damn, very impressive.”

But after thinking about it a bit, and I think before a major purchase like this playing devil’s advocate is a must, there are few things I need to understand/experience before I’m putting down my hard earned cash. So here’s my concerns:

1) The touchscreen - From my previous experiences with my previous Cingular 8125, the touchscreen has to be decent before I buy. There was a bit of a delay on my old phone and I was fat fingering like crazy with it. Bottom line: IT WAS A PAIN IN THE ARSE!

2) Lack of 3G Service - Steve glided right over this tid bit of info but he only stated GSM + EDGE service for the phone but what about 3G service? This might make me wait until the 2nd gen iPhone alone. My older smartphone only did up to EDGE networking and it wasn’t great for surfing, I’m afraid Wifi will be a must. 3G still isn’t perfect either but it’s a vast improvement over the EDGE network for your mobile Internet experience.

3) 2 Megapixel Camera - This is minor for me but some people want a higher resolution camera for pictures. I noticed there was no ‘mirror’ either which again, isn’t a big deal to me but some might.

4) No 3rd party development? - Since the release this morning there have been some talk about Apple might consider not allowing anyone to develop on their phone. I, personally, think this is a overblown a bit. If Apple didn’t allow developers to develop on this platform it would kill alot of the joy of the device and go against what Apple’s been about for a long time. If it truly is OS X, then it shouldn’t be that tough to transition desktop apps to mobile (I hope).

5) I’d be stretching to find a fifth so I won’t…despite the above it still looks like a great phone. Should be fun to see what’s to come and how the competition will react.

Another thought: I really think that Cingular deserves some major applause. Not only for the fact that they sign a deal with Apple sight unseen but because the dealt with the barrage of consumer bitching at them about not coming out with a product to compete with the Moto Q. People, myself included, thought Cingular was dropping the ball but all the while knowing keeping this little gem under wraps. Well done Cingular.
