Gastric Bypass Surgery | 1 Month Post-Op

March 9, 2007

So it’s now officially been a couple days over my 1-month since my surgery. Decided to arrange this post exactly like the last one so you can see the changes I’ve made in each section.

Post-Op

Well my staples have been out for a couple of weeks and the scars are looking like they will be minimal. I have 6 incisions all together (kinda formed like a pyramid) and it looks like the bottom right one will have the biggest scar. The rest will be minor. I have been having some odd pain off the right side of my belly button, not near an incision. I did some research on the Web and they said abdominal hernias were common after surgery so it got me worried and I contacted the doctor. He said it was way to early for a hernia and that is was most likely a suture that is tugging. The pain only occurs when I’m bending over or doing stuff like coughing or laughing. Hope that stays the case.

Food

I’ve been on soft foods for a while now and it has been great. I never knew how good oatmeal was until I started eating it again. I still stick to soups quite a bit (they’re easy) and I’m been drinking protein shakes by Myoplex pretty regularly. Another option, if you’re looking for more protein, are these protein vials called New-Whey. They come in a variety of flavors (taste like a gel Sweet Tart to me) but they come in 25 gram and 46 gram vials so it’s nice when you don’t get much protein in for the day to take one of those and you’re back on track.

I’m also eating things like pastas (angel hair is good/easy), oatmeal, chili, and even had some small pieces of brisket last night. Had a business lunch yesterday and went to a buffet…I’m sure the guy was wondering why I was eating so little. I stuck with fruit and cottage cheese mainly. No desserts!

Supplements

I have officially thrown out the liquid vitamins, I went through it all. Now I’m using adult chewables by Nature’s Brand and they are easy and taste good. I also take a B12 sublingual now and take these gel packets for Omega3 called Coromega-3…they also tastes good and no fishy taste (I got the lemon-lime flavor). I’ve gotten all this stuff from the Vitamin Shoppe but I’m thinking of buying more in bulk online to get a better deal now that I know what I like.

Weight

As of this morning, I officially have hit the 250s. I weighed in at 259 this morning which means that is 40 pounds total thus far. YES! I can definitely tell a difference in the clothes I can wear (and couldn’t wear before). I even told my wife that two months prior the slacks I was wearing last night wouldn’t fit me so I wouldn’t wear them anymore. But yesterday, I put them on, not thinking about it, and realized later that those were the slacks I had on…and they were loose now! Very good feeling. We took pictures this morning (far right picture is most current) and I included the previous two for comparison. Hope everyone else is doing well!

I’m ready to start running and working out again so I will really feel like I’m back to my normal routine. We are evaluating gyms as we speak. I hate going to those things and getting ‘pitched’ by their sales guys. Oh well, necessary evil I suppose.
