Becoming a prosumer | Canon EOS Rebel XTi Review

April 4, 2007

Canon EOS Rebel XTi

So about a month ago I went to SXSWi and complained about my pictures coming out very blurry, dark, and just overall bad. I knew it was due to my point-n-shoot camera which really isn’t that bad, in its optimal conditions, but for anything semi-quality I knew we were going to have to upgrade to something better. So I originally started off looking for a higher megapixel camera but thought that it was getting to the point that if we, and I mean my wife and I, are going to start taking more pictures that we should just invest in something a bit higher end than what we normally do. So that got me looking into the prosumer space. Side note: I did look into the professional space too but at spending at least $1500-$2000 a camera (without a lense) I quickly clicked off that page. :)

The first space I look for any sort of quality reviews is on CNET. I’ve done it for years for anything from cameras to televisions to consoles. I think they do a good job and are fair. So after looking around a bit I came across their review of the Canon EOS Rebel XTi. The bottom line for me when purchasing anything tech related is I look for the best ‘BANG TO BUCK’ ratio. I don’t generally want the most expensive thing out there but I don’t want the cheapest either. So they rated it a 7.8 out of 10 and it was also recommended by other consumers that have bought the camera as well. I also checked out Amazon and their reviews were positive and helpful.

So I went to Circuit City and bought it.

The camera’s been great. There are alot of things to get used to with this type of prosumer camera. The modes, the ISO types, the possibility to switch lenses, the lack of a digital viewfinder, etc. We are currently just trying it with the lense it came with and not trying to get too fancy on the manual controls (just sticking with the mode options based on the shot). The picture is great and HUGE (normally like 30MB a file and like 3200×3000!) and it is possible to take shots in a wider variety of settings (dark, light, overcast, whatever).

For the type of person that is looking to get into the prosumer camera space I would definitely recommend the camera. It isn’t really bulky, Canon’s customer service is great, and the pictures have turned out great.
