Running a business can often times feel like those performers at halftime. The one that spins plates and try to keep 50 plates going at the same time without breaking one. Course if running a business were easy, everyone would do it, right? But of all the plates in the air one that I ensure is never going to fall is how we treat our people and how they feel while working AKA our work culture.
We all do this whole ‘work’ thing for a large percentage of our lives so it seems only right, in my eyes, to keep it as easy-going and fun as possible. We all understand that it can’t be fun 100% of the time but we can definitely shoot for that number. I care a great deal about our employees and ensuring their happiness means a lot to me. I’m always thinking about ways to improve our culture and make it more fun. Even silly things can make all the difference. Like our MSPT (mandatory spontaneous P.I.G. tournament) that happens at some point on Friday’s, if we’re in the office). It allows us to get up from our desks and stretch, rag each other a bit, and just have a little fun.
As a small business owner, we unfortunately don’t have the budget to do the things that Google but we try to make do with what we can. We have no dress code in our office (wear what you want I say), everyone is free to come and go as they please, and often work from home. We can do this because there is the understanding that if you have work to do you need to do it in a timely manner and if you’re done with everything else, enjoy your free time.
Some managers freak out when they hear things like that but it’s my contention that everything goes back to managing your employees. You must guide them and if they don’t have anything productive to do, who’s fault is that? Their’s? Certainly not. It’s your buddy, you need to better manage your peeps! Engage them, motivate them, give them goals to strive towards to be the employee you want them to be.
